文中资料是以普法战争为背景，主人公是一位生活在社会最底层，受人歧视的xx，有一辆法国的驿车在离开敌区时，被一名普鲁士军官扣留，军官要求羊脂球陪他过夜，否则驿车就不能经过，可是羊脂球出于自我爱国之心，毅然拒绝。可是同车上的有身份的乘客为了自身利益，逼她为了大家而牺牲自我，在无情的威胁之下，羊脂球被迫做出无奈的选择，救了大家。然而当第二天驿车出发时，那些乘客很无情的疏远她，不再与她讲话。仿佛她是一个病毒一般，完全忘了自我的自由是她牺牲自我换来的。
